Sony Mastersound 2000 Reissue Series (1-bit DSD CDs in paper sleeves)

In May-June 2000 Sony Japan began reissuing their Mastersound series of Miles Davis CDs. This series incorporates Sony's much-hyped "Direct Stream Digital" digitization process. According to Sony, "Super Audio CD sound is made possible by Direct Stream Digital (DSD) recording technology. DSD is a 1-bit recording process that uses a sampling rate of 2.8224 MHz to achieve a frequency response of 100 KHz and a dynamic range of over 120 dB across the audible range." (Note: unlike the titles listed below -- those with "SRGS-" prefixes -- the Mastersound CDs are normal CDs.) The first pressing of these CDs was packaged in cardboard LP-style sleeves; subsequent pressings will be packaged in jewel cases. Some of the CDs contain extra tracks not on the original LPs and CDs. The first ten were released on May 24; the rest on June 21.

Here's some contemporary reportage from the jazz press: Columbia is importing them rather than producing them in the states "because the limited U.S. market for jazz specialty items doesn't always justify the manufacturing expense." They are aimed primarily at collectors. "Fidelity is the main reason Columbia/Legacy decided to take this unusual step. Reissue producers Michael Cuscuna, Bob Belden, and Phil Schapp [sic]... helmed the remastering sessions for these Japanese reissues. This assures that Davis fans will not be subjected to the common collector's remorse of seeking out a pricey import, only to find that the domestic version released down the line sounds better." [Ed. note: yeah, yeah. See below.]

"We're in the process of redoing the whole Miles Davis catalog," says Seth Rothstein, Director of Jazz Marketing for Columbia/Legacy. "We're going to pull every record from the shelves sooner or later and just redo them, upgrading the masters, adding photos and liner notes. In certain cases, obviously, the releases in this [Japanese] series precede the work we're doing because it's much harder to compile CDs the way we do them in the states. In Japan, they do them with no bonus material and no extra photographs. Their demand is much higher in their market, so there are cases where they are putting out things with masters that are better than the old Jazz Masterpieces versions that we haven't gotten around to redoing yet. In a year, year and a half, these albums will all be redone."
