Hank Mobley joined the Davis Quintet in late 1960 and immediately hit the road: Cloister Club, Chicago (December 26-January 8); Bradford Hotel Storyville Room, Boston (January 23-28); a live jazz program for Chicago's WMBI-FM (February 6); Kleinhans Music Hall, Buffalo (February 25); Village Vanguard, New York (February 28-March 12); Shrine Auditorium, Los Angeles (March 31); Blackhawk Supper Club, San Francisco (April 4-30); Foster's House of Jazz, Detroit (May 25-28).

Although Columbia recorded the Quintet on only two nights, the dates are sometimes listed as April 14-15 and 21-22 (see Ken Vail, Miles' Diary and Jack Chambers, Milestones). Neither Vail nor Chambers mentions the tunes originally issued on Magnetic 125.

The original Columbia LPs (CL 1669 and 1670) and their early equivalents (CBS/Sony SONP 50070 and 50071, etc.) were titled In Person Friday Nights at the Blackhawk and In Person Saturday Nights at the Blackhawk. The first Columbia and CBS/Sony CD releases bore these titles as well. Beginning with the Sony Master Sound CDs (SRCS 9316 and 9317), titles have been altered to In Person Friday Night... and In Person Saturday Night....

Several tunes are edited on issues prior to Sony SRCS 9316 and 9317. The following tunes were restored to their full length:

  • "Oleo" (first set) - add 1:48 to ts solo (clean edit at 2:14 of abridged version removed 2:14-4:02 of master). Unedited: Davis solo (0:25-2:14); Mobley solo (2:15-5:40); Kelly solo (5:42-6:26); closing theme. Edited: Davis (0:25-2:14); Mobley (2:15-3:53); Kelly (3:54-4:39); closing theme.
  • "No Blues" (first set) - add ts solo and beginning of p solo (audible splice at 4:52 of abridged version removed 4:52-11:29 of master); add end of p solo into b solo (audible splice at 6:53 of abridged version removed 13:31-15:17 of master). Unedited: Davis solo (0:16-4:56); Mobley solo (4:57-10:16); Kelly solo (10:17-13:32); Chambers solo (13:38-15:17); Davis/Cobb exchanges (15:17-16:32); closing theme.   • "Fran Dance" (third set) - add b solo (clean edit at 4:28 of abridged version removed 4:28-5:57 of master).   • "On Green Dolphin Street" (third set) - add piano intro at 0:00-0:51; add 2:05 to ts solo (clean edit at 2:21 of abridged version removed 3:12-5:17 of master); add b solo (clean edit at 6:47 of abridged version removed 9:41-11:09 of master). Unedited: Davis muted opening chorus + solo (0:00-3:12); Mobley solo (3:12-6:47); Kelly solo (6:47-9:41); Chambers solo (9:41-11:09); closing theme. Edited: Davis (0:00-2:21); Mobley (2:21-3:50); Kelly (3:50-6:45); closing theme.

The first set began with "Autumn Leaves," recorded but rejected by Columbia; and the third set concluded with Wynton Kelly's solo "Love, I've Found You," also rejected.
