My God, this is a big place. But you're going to hear a lot of wonderful music this evening, uh, a lot of new music, and I can only assure you that if on your way home tonight, either en route in your automobile or when you get there, if you wanna crank in on what I do, you'll hear some more of the good music of Miles Davis. Now I'm not one for long-windedness, 'cause I know that you're as anxious to hear the groups as I, so I think I should like to introduce you to the gentlemen one at a time, and tell you that this night the proceedings here on stage are gonna be recorded, so that having enjoyed them out there this evening, you'll be able to enjoy them over and over again on the Columbia album that Miles is about to do. I'd like you to know a young man who has created quite a stir in the music world, his name is Tony Williams. Tony Williams... When you see this young man you know that there's a lot of good music yet to be made, I think Tony's about nineteen years old -- it's kinda scary that a young man should have so much talent. This concert was a fundraiser for voter registration sponsored by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), the Committee on Racial Equality (CORE), and the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC). Apparently Davis did not tell the other members of the group beforehand that they would not be paid their usual wages for this performance.

Columbia C7K-90840 includes both concerts in their entirety and in performance order. Columbia's two-CD Complete Concert (C2K 48821) simply reproduces the two original LPs/CDs with the titles in their original order, which is quite different than the order in which they were performed.

The Quintet began the year with a one-week engagement at the Jazz City Lounge in Buffalo's Town Casino (December 31-January 6), where the opening night was canceled because of snow. They were booked for four nights (January 16-19) at the Casa Loma Club in Montreal. Soon after this Lincoln Center engagement the Quintet headed west, where they played at the It Club, Los Angeles (March 27-April 5). On Friday and Saturday March 27-28 they played after-hours sets (beginning at 1:30) at the Adams-West Theatre, also known as the Kabuki Theatre; and on April 3 they performed at the Shrine Auditorium with Count Basie's band and The Three Sounds. The Quintet was scheduled for a two-week return engagement at the It Club beginning April 29, but the gig may have been canceled. In any case, they went on to the Jazz Workshop in San Francisco (April 7-19) and UCLA's Royce Hall Auditorium (April 24). An ad for the Jazz Workshop gig notes that "for the next two weeks the saloon's liquor license will be lifted to let an eighteen year old Negro play the drums."
