Although Davis was busy with his new Quintet, this all-star group was brought into the Prestige studio to complete the failed 1953 session with Charlie "Chan" Parker and Sonny Rollins. Rollins returned to New York in early 1956, having kicked his heroin habit, and in the months preceding this session he had made some excellent recordings with the Clifford Brown/Max Roach Quintet. This is the only studio recording of Davis with Tommy Flanagan.

On "In Your Own Sweet Way" Davis takes a three-chorus Harmon-muted solo; he is followed by Rollins (3x) and Flanagan (1x), and returns for a closing chorus, also muted.

"No Line" begins in medias res with two choruses of Davis (still muted), three strikingly inventive choruses by Rollins, two by Flanagan, and two more by Davis. The tune just ends without any sort of resolution.

"Vierd Blues" -- to be re-done as "Trane's Blues" with the Quintet in May, but also recorded a couple weeks before by Coltrane and Paul Chambers as "John Paul Jones" -- features four open choruses by Davis, six fairly restrained choruses by Rollins, and four by Flanagan, followed by the re-statement of the melody.

The Davis/Coltrane Quintet was very busy during this period. After the first Prestige session on November 16, 1955, they played at Basin Street in New York (November 18-19); Olivia Davis' Patio Lounge in Washington (November 21-27); The Birdland Show Lounge in Chicago (December 21, 1955-January 1, 1956); Jazz City in Hollywood (January 6-19); The Blackhawk Supper Club in San Francisco (January 24-February 5); Jazz City, Hollywood (February 10-March 1); Birdland Show Lounge (March 7-11 -- probably canceled because the "Birdland Show Lounge" was in the midst of a lawsuit filed by Birdland in New York; the Chicago venue changed its name briefly to "Chicago's ? Show Lounge," then to "Chicago's Birdband Show Lounge," and finally to "Budland"); Graystone Ballroom, Detroit (March 12); Loop Lounge, Cleveland (March 19-25); Blue Note, Philadelphia (March 26-31); Ridge Crest Inn, Rochester NY (April 3-8); Oyster Barrel, Quebec City (April 9-15); Storyville Club, Boston (April 16-22); Café Bohemia, New York (May 3-9 and May 25-June 10).
