This is an early occurrence of "Funk" (aka "Prelude, part 1"), which was evolving
during this period. It followed "Right Off" in many concerts from late 1973 to early
1974; by May 1974 it appeared by itself, and was a standard set-opener from late
1974 through the summer of 1975.
The Zipperdeke CD is sonically inferior and contains many fragments and a lot of
duplication. It also includes some music from Los Angeles, May 1:
- Turnaroundphrase (inc), 12:01
- Tune in 5 (inc), 9:03
- Right Off (inc), 3:26
- Funk (inc), 5:03
- Right Off (repeat 3), 3:21
- Funk (repeat 4), 8:14
- Tune in 5 (inc), 12:00
- Ife (inc), 5:16
- Agharta Prelude (inc), 9:36
- Zimbabwe (inc), 5:33
- Ife (repeat 8, inc), 3:35
- Agharta Prelude (repeat 9, inc), 9:44
- Zimbabwe (repeat 10), 10:50
- Tune in 5 (repeat 7, inc), 4:41
- Ife (inc), 6:57
- Ife (repeat 15), 8:19
- Agharta Prelude (repeat 9, inc), 0:11
- Zimbabwe (repeat 10, inc), 7:06
- Turnaroundphrase (May 1, inc), 4:48
- Zimbabwe (May 1, inc), 3:08
- Tune in 5 (May 1, inc), 3:32
- Agharta Prelude (repeat 9, inc), 7:13
A Mega Disc CD reverses the order of the two sets but is sonically better than Jazz
Masters or Zipperdeke. The Hannibal CD is listed as a soundboard recording and as
the "definitive" edition; the sound is certainly better than previously issued versions,
but the indexes are in weird places.
Lonnie Smith, Khalil Balakrishna, and Badal Roy left in May, and Davis took over
the keyboard duties himself. The new Davis Septet embarked on a tour of Japan in
June, and Europe in July. The itinerary for the Japanese tour was as follows:
June 16 (Sat): Sapporo Koseinenkinkaikan Hall (6:30 pm)
June 19 (Tue): Tokyo Koseinenkinkaikan Hall (7:00 pm)
June 20 (Wed): Tokyo Koseinenkinkaikan Hall (7:00 pm)
June 22 (Fri): Tokyo Koseinenkinkaikan Hall (7:00 pm)
June 23 (Sat): Nagoya Shiminkaikan (Nagoya civic auditorium) (6:30 pm)
June 25 (Mon): Kyoto Hall (6:30 pm)
June 28 (Thu): Fukuoka Shiminkaikan (Fukuoka civic
auditorium) (6:30 pm)
June 29 (Fri): Hiroshima Yubin-Chokin Hall (6:30 pm)
June 30 (Sat): Osaka Festival Hall (two shows, 4:00
pm and 7:00 pm)
July 1 (Sun): Kanazawa City Kankokaikan Hall (6:30 pm
July 3 (Tue): Niigata Kenminkaikann (6:30 pm)
Thanks to Eric Jooris for providing me with a copy of the concert program, and to
Tom Yamaguchi for translating the schedule for me.
