Parker, along with Lester Young and George Handy, was hired for this date but
did not show up. Consensus is that Thompson returned on tenor saxophone and
that Al Haig subbed for Handy.
This session is often dated February 7, but according to Ross Russell it
took place on the night following the rehearsal, which took place on
February 4 (see Russell's account in Robert Reisner, Bird: The Legend
of Charlie Parker, pp. 196-97; Ross Russell, Bird Lives: The High
Life and Hard Times of Charlie (Yardbird) Parker, p. 205).
"Dynamo" is "Dizzy Atmosphere," and the discographical puzzles created by
the many Dial releases with these tunes and the various takes of "When I
Grow Too Old to Dream" and "'Round Midnight," are well known. The group
is listed as the "Tempo Jazz Men" on the labels of Dial 1001, 1002, 1003,
1004 ("Moose the Mooche" b/w "When I Grow Too Old to Dream"), 1005, and
1008; they are listed as "Dizzy Gillespie Jazzmen" on Dial 1004
("Confirmation" b/w "Diggin' Diz").
I am grateful to Leif Bo Petersen and Chieo Yamada for help with this session.
