These tunes were recorded by Ray Crawford, a friend of Phil Baxter's,
during a jam session at a party in Baxter's home on the east side of
Kansas City. The recordings were never released, though open-reel
copies were made as backups.
At various points in "Bird Song #1" Parker quotes "Twisted," "Buttons and Bows,"
and "Pick Yourself Up." During "Bird Song #2" he quotes "Kim" and "Moose the
Mooche." "Bird Song #3" is based on the changes of "Lady Be Good." Parker
is very fluent and inventive on all these tunes.
