Given the titles, the music is probably from at least two different nights. The
Davis Quintet was booked for four nights at the Jazz Workshop, December 5-8.
Although Cowell is not audible on the titles listed above, his presence is
confirmed by Bob Blementhal and in a Cowell interview with Michael Cuscuna.
Following this date at the Jazz Workshop, the Quintet played a week (December 9-14)
at the Black Bottom Club in Montréal, where Stanley Cowell was added on acoustic
piano. According to a review of one night's performance in Coda magazine,
the group performed "Agitation," "Walkin'," "'Round Midnight," "Masqualero,"
"Gingerbread Boy," "Dolores," "Footprints," "Riot, "Stella by Starlight," and "Stuff."
The Quintet was booked for two weeks at the Plugged Nickel Club in Chicago
(December 20-January 1; closed December 23, 26, and 30). These were Tony Williams'
last live gigs with the Quintet. He remained with Davis through the February 18
In a Silent Way session. He was originally slated to accompany the Quintet
on a Japanese tour in January 1969, but the tour was canceled due to trouble with
Japanese immigration officials. Jack De Johnette replaced Williams for good in
late February 1969.
