The Davis Septet played two concerts (8pm and 11pm) at the Playhouse, opening for
Herbie Hancock's Headhunters. The tour began at Constitution Hall, Washington (March
15) and continued into the midwest: Syria Mosque, Pittsburgh (March 17); Northern
Illinois University, DeKalb (March 26); Kiel Opera House, St. Louis (March 27);
Riverside Theater, Milwaukee (March 28); Arie Crown Theater, Chicago (March 30);
Orchestra Hall, Minneapolis (April 8) -- and probably other dates as well. But Davis
collapsed with a bleeding ulcer after the St. Louis concert, and the remaining stops
on the tour had to be canceled. Soon afterward Davis was back in the hospital for
surgery to remove nodes on his larynx.
I am grateful to Mark Kirchenmann and Larry Crawford for help with this session.
