Sirk on Melodrama "Well, the word 'melodrama' has rather lost its meaning nowadays: people tend to lose the 'melos' in it, the music. I am not an American, indeed I came to this folklore of American melodrama from a world crazily removed from it. But I was fascinated with the kind of picture which is called a melodram, in America. As I told you, at Ufa, I made several pictures which could be called melodramas: Schlussakkord was one kind of melodrama, and Zu Neuen Ufern and La Habanera were another kind of melodram. But all three melodramas in the sense of music + drama. Melodrama in the American sense is rather the archetype of a kind of cinema which connects with drama." (3) My thought: So, there is a point to all of those dramatic music scenes! |
