This is the second of three Columbia sessions scheduled while Davis was still fulfilling
the terms of his contract with Prestige. It provides another index of Davis' improvement
as a soloist: compare this version of "Dear Old Stockholm" to that recorded at the
first Blue Note session in May 1952.
Take 5 of "Dear Old Stockholm" was performed at the end of the session, after the
other titles. The tempo is quicker than on earlier takes. The takes of "Dear Old
Stockholm" are included on The Making of 'Round About Midnight (Kind of
Blue KOB 004).
"Tadd's Delight" is essentially the same tune as "Webb's Delight" (the Dameron
Group's theme as performed at the Royal Roost in February 1949) and "Sid's Delight"
(as recorded by Dameron and Fats Navarro for Capitol M-11059 the same year). Dameron
was apparently keen on delight -- there's also "John's Delight," a different tune
recorded with Davis for Capitol in April 1949.
In the time between Davis' last two Prestige sessions (May 11 and October 26),
and during which he was actively recording for Columbia, the Quintet maintained
a busy touring schedule: Café Bohemia, New York (May 3-9 and May 25-June
10; Blue Note, Philadelphia (June 11-16); Crown Propeller Lounge, Chicago (June
19-July 8); Graystone Ballroom, Detroit (Monday, July 9); Peacock Alley, St. Louis
(July 13-21); Rouge Lounge, Detroit (July 24-29, probably canceled); Café
Bohemia, New York (September 7-29); Storyville, Boston (October 1-7); Café
Bohemia, New York (October 15-29)
