The date of this recording, which exists only as a monaural reference tape, is uncertain.
Shorter does not play. It is searching and exploratory, with a beautiful interlude
by Hancock before Davis re-joins. The notes to the Quintet box (Mosaic MQ10-177,
Columbia Legacy C6K 67398) place it somewhere in the period "May-July 1967." It is probably
later rather than earlier in the series of many New York studio sessions during this period
-- closer to late July than early June.
After returning from the west coast in mid-May, the Quintet was booked at the Village
Vanguard (June 2-4). They traveled to Atlanta GA for a concert on June 16 or 17, and
to Newport RI for the Newport Jazz Festival (July 2). They were booked at the Village
Gate (July 4-16 opposite Dizzy Gillespie, and August 15-27 opposite Ornette Coleman).
They also played at The Watts Summer Festival, held at the Shrine Auditorium in Los
Angeles, on August 21-22.
