This concert, a lavish affair promoted by Leonard Feather, offered "a program of the new jazz" featuring Gillespie's big band and Ella Fitzgerald. Parker was included as a guest star in the quintet format for a short set. Guest status seems to have irked Parker, and his interactions with Gillespie are more agonistic than usual. Tempos on some of the pieces, e.g. "Dizzy Atmosphere," are very fast, but for the most part Parker and Gillespie are brilliant. The piano is barely audible on most tunes.

The quintet recordings were made by the Carnegie Hall recording service, but they were stolen and released as 78s on Black Deuce. Both "A Night in Tunisia" and "Groovin' High" were divided into two parts because of their length.
