This is a solid session with excellent playing by everyone involved. Parker is in complete control, and his solos on "Back Home Blues" (especially take 2) and "Lover Man" are models of his mature style: economical, carefully constructed yet loose, with great emotional power.

"Swedish Schnapps" is often credited to Charlie Shavers, but Shavers' version of the tune is quite different than this one. Shavers' tune was recorded by Gene Krupa for Clef (MGC 897) on September 10, 1953 with Shavers (tpt); Bill Harris (tb); Ben Webster (ts); Herb Ellis (g); Teddy Wilson (p); Ray Brown (b); and Gene Krupa (d). I am grateful to John Griffin for discussion of this tune.
