Davis attended and was honored for the best jazz LP, Tutu. He and Rubén Blades later presented the nominees for the best jazz vocal performance, male.

According to an interview in Jazz Forum #114 (May 1988), there was a sort of rehearsal before the ceremony, but Davis did not participate.
